Kauai Backroads TourEnjoy an exclusive fun-filled half day sightseeing tour on the private lands of the former Grove Farm on the beautiful island of Kauai. Aloha Kauai Tours will meet you at the historic Kilohana, home of Gaylord’s restaurant and assorted shops. We will head out in an air conditioned 4-wheel drive van. The tour follows a figure eight route and covers approximately 33 miles. We will head first to the top of Kilohana Crater (1250 feet in elevation). On the way up the gently sloping sides of the crater, notice the vegetation changing from sugar to guava to pine and bamboo forests. Beside the road, you will even see wild orchids sprouting. The crater is about one half mile across, and is now filled with vegetation and home to wild pigs. Enjoy a majestic 360 degree view of the eastern side of Kauai that’ll make your head spin. Rainbows and waterfalls are often visible, thanks to some passing trade showers. Next, we’ll head down the back side of Kilohana, towards a rest area. While traveling, our knowledgable guides will educate passengers on the formation of the islands, the Polynesian migration, culture and history of Hawaii, the sugar industry and other agriculture. Feel free to ask questions in this small group environment. A prominent point of interest on the tour is the cane tunnel. The tunnel was built after WWII to save miles for the cane trucks heading to the Koloa mill and the trucks delivering sugar to the harbor. Now you’ll see corn and coffee where the sugar used to grow. Next we will head towards Mahaulepu, a breathtaking area of rugged coastline and gorgeous beaches. Take a guided walk or just enjoy the picturesque scenery. The Kauai Backroads tour will then return to Kilohana through Koloa, Hawaii’s oldest plantation town. Don’t forget your camera for this exciting Kauai activity! This tour is 4 hours long.
