Some of the best sights in Maui are a hundred feet under the crystal clear, blue Pacific ocean and one of the most fun ways to enjoy the bounty of life there is to take a tour with
Atlantis Submarines in old Lahaina.
Your tour begins as you step onboard the Kapena – your ride to the Atlantis submarine. Your captain gives you a quick safety lecture and you’re under way. A short 10 minutes later and you gather around the observation deck to watch the submarine surface – truly an amazing sight! Now its your turn to climb onboard. Don’t rush, everyone gets a good seat with a clear view through one of the submarine’s many windows.
As soon as the skipper gets clearance to descend, the submarine starts diving into the clear blue ocean. A digital depth gauge tells you how far down the submarine has dropped. Out of the blue, the sea floor begins to come into view. It takes a minute to adjust to the light and patterns on the seabed, but soon you’ll start to see a few fish. The sub doesn’t drop directly onto the reef to keep from damaging any of the delicate coral.

Before long, the reef is in view and your view of the undersea explodes. There is life everywhere down here! A handy fish identification chart is next to each observation window to help identify what you see, but your guide announces over the loudspeaker what fish he sees so you don’t have to spend precious time looking at a chart. There are so many different fish that your eyes can’t focus on just one. There are two sides to the sub so both can’t see the reef at once, but the captain turns the vessel around so both port and starboard windows get a similar chance. Keep your eyes peeled because there is the remote possibility that you’ll see something rare – a ray, an octopus, an eel, or possibly even a shark! The captain says that 1 in 10 trips see sharks. They are apex predators and as such, are not common. Regardless, there is always something different and exciting to see.
Next, the captain steers the sub to the wreck of the Carthagenian, a scuttled vessel that is well on its way to becoming an artificial reef. The fish know its there and many of them are swimming around it. As the ship comes into view, the captain explains its origin as the tour continues. Where did it come from and how did it end up at the bottom of the ocean outside Lahaina, Maui? You’ll have to take the tour to find out…

The tour is just about over now, and the captain gets clearance for the sub to ascend. The Kapena meets you on the surface, and you disembark from the submarine in the middle of the water! Your short trip back to the harbor is a relaxing cruise along the Lahaina shore – a great sightseeing opportunity and chance to take more pictures!
If you find yourself in Lahaina, make sure Atlantis Submarines makes it onto your list of Maui activities. This is one Hawaii tour you’ll never forget.
