Hawaii has a strong Japanese presence, so it makes sense that there are some great Japanese Restaurants in Kauai.
Whether you’re looking for sushi or some great, authentic dishes, these 5 Japanese restaurants in Kauai are some of the best that Hawaii has to offer:
1 – Sushi Bushido Restaurant
Located in Kaapa town, Sushi Bushido is a family run restaurant with exciting flavors and a funky artsy vibe.
The restaurant is named after the Japanese Samurai Warrior’s code, and the discipline and precision can be seen in the exacting presentation of the food.
Specialty sushis like the Golden Roll or Bushido Roll are one-of-a-kind treats, and the entire menu is packed with bold flavors and fusion-style experimentation. This spirit is reflected in the art, done by Sarah Wymer, which fills the walls and gives the restaurant a unique atmosphere.
It is open for lunch and dinner most days, but hours vary, so be sure to call ahead.
2 – Makai Sushi
Makai Sushi in Koloa is a true hidden gem. Don’t let its location – in a convenience store – throw you off. Once you try their food, you’ll be in sushi heaven.
Their sushi is some of the freshest around, and they specialize in flavor-packed bowls. It’s a great way to enjoy sushi, lathered in flavorful sauces and toppings.
It’s all made right in front of your eyes…and for a reasonable price too.
3 – Kintaro Restaurant
Kintaro restaurant is a favorite of locals and tourists alike, and offers some of the best sushi on the island. Located on the East Side of Kauai, the restaurant has a great authentic atmosphere, with Japanese-inspired designs and friendly staff.
And of course, the food is excellent.
Every type of sushi, from the rolls to sashimi are hand-prepared with fresh, local ingredients. Be sure to look out for favorites like the spicy tuna, hamachi, and Bali Hai Bomb. There are several dining options, including a bar, sushi bar, teppan yaki, or traditional family-style seating.
To make things even sweeter, the prices are very reasonable.
4 – Sushi Katsu Japanese
Sushi Katsu Japanese is an unassuming restaurant in Lahui, and it is home to some of the best sushi in Kauai, as well as some delicious entrees.
It’s a sushi joint through and through, with freshly caught sushi and sashimi, but their other dishes are amazing as well. The fish tempura, beef katsu, saimin, and short ribs are favorites for those not sushi-inclined.
It can get crowded at dinner, and sometimes has long wait times for food, so it’s best to go at lunchtime.
5 – Kiibo Restaurant
This local favorite is a good example of not judging a book by its cover. Its hole-in-the-wall appearance and low-key atmosphere make it seem unassuming, but the food is out of this world.
The food leans less towards sushi and more towards traditional Japanese entrees. If you want a full stomach and happy taste buds, then this is the place to go. You’ll get spectacular teriyaki, miso soup, tempura, fresh sashimi, and fabulous sukiyaki bowls.
There’s also available tatami mat seating for those who want a more authentic experience.
