This summer, 2016, there are a wide-variety of Big Island events, including festivals, fairs, and cultural events that highlight island life. Check out some of our favorite options for the months of July and August.
1. 8th Annual Big Island Pride Pageant, Kailua-Kona – July 8th
This annual event celebrates the Big Island’s LGBT community. Both male and female contestants from all over the island come together to compete in a variety of different categories that focus on brains and creativity, rather than looks.
Held at the King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel – the fun starts at 5:30pm.
2. Hilo Triathlon – July 10
A test of endurance, the Hilo Triathlon brings together people from all different walks of life.
Three different events will take participants from land to sea and offer spectators a rip-roaring good time. After the event has ended and the winners have been announced, you should stick around for a beach barbecue that’s guaranteed to be a good time.
3. Joann Williams 25th Annual Christmas in July Art, Gift & Craft Fair, Kona – July 16
It’s never too early to start your Christmas shopping, right?
If you’re in the market for unique gifts and authentic souvenirs to take back home, then make sure to check out this Christmas in July outdoor event. Over 100 local vendors from all over the state are gathering together to showcase their incredible talent and goods.
The festival is open from 9am to 5pm at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel.
4. 34th Annual Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club Show & Sale, Kealakekua – July 17
This annual show and sale celebrates the glorious beauty and fragrance of orchids.
This year’s show pays homage to the centennial of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and comes equipped with a wide variety of orchids, such as:
- Cattleya
- Cymbidium
- Phalaenopsis
- Plus, many more.
The show starts at 8:00 AM. Get there early for some complimentary snacks and a beautiful orchid corsage.
5. 8th Annual Mango Festival, Kona – August 6
Mango salad, mango salsa, and mango sorbet – these are just 3 of the hundreds of mango delights you can expect to find at Kona’s annual mango celebration.
If you’re looking for a food-centric way to spend the afternoon, this festival has become a fan favorite. It’s about more than just delicious treats, though. Check out some of these exciting things to look forward to:

6. Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai Festival, Kona – August 13
If you’ve ever tasted a famous Hawaiian Mai Tai, then you can probably understand why it’s earned its own festival.
This event will see 20 of the world’s leading bartending competing to make the world’s best Mai Tai. There will also be other events like a barbecue cook-off and pool party.
This year’s festival will be held at the exquisite Royal Kona Resort.
