Maui’s north shore has always been popular among surfers and adrenaline-seekers everywhere.
But this thrilling coastline has other sides to it that make it an enticing destination for every traveler.
Not only can you find some of Maui’s most exciting beaches for surfers and windsurfers, but you can also find tropical rainforest and historic towns to explore.
Step up your vacation – or slow it down – on Maui’s north shore with these great Maui activities….
The Town of Paia
The historic town of Paia was once a thriving plantation town, back when Maui was an important part of the sugar cane industry. Close to Hookipa Beach, the town is a great place to either begin or end your day on Maui’s north shore.
Today, the town is home to a colorful display of shops, galleries, boutiques and restaurants. It also has a number of accommodation options for those who want to spend more time here.
Be sure to check out Paia Fishmarket and sample the fish burger. You can also find Mama’s Fish House here, which has been named as one of the best restaurants in all of Maui.
Hookipa Beach Park
The world-famous Hookipa Beach Park is known as a fantastic windsurfing spot.
It also has some great amenities, including plenty of options for those looking to try some of the more daredevil watersports that Hawaii has to offer. This white sandy beach has some of the best waves on the Maui coastline, and has been known as the “home of contemporary surfing” since the 1930s.
The beach also hosts a number of events and competitions – so make sure you check the beach calendar.
Zipling in Haiku
Head a little bit inland and see Maui’s northerly rainforest from the quaint and quiet town of Haiku.
Not only can you explore the pretty little town, but you can also take a seven-zipline tour into the rainforest canopy, reaching heights of 70 feet and speeds of up to 40 mph. This zipline adventure is a perfect way to view Maui’s beautiful Pacific Ocean and lush forest landscape from above as you travel from tree to tree.
Any experience level is welcome: the activity is led by experienced guides and is a great way to experience an adrenaline rush without any risk.
Baldwin Beach
Popular with local people, Baldwin Beach is a long and beautiful stretch of sand that offers a great, laid-back experience that’s characteristic of Maui’s north shore.
The beach has a number of great shady spots beneath the ironwood trees that line the beach, and there are plenty of picnic tables and grills for visitors. Many people use this beach simply to exercise and relax, since the waves can sometimes be too choppy and the current too strong for swimming.
