Hawaii’s best whale-watching tours are a great way to see humpback whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and more.
Between December and May you’ll stand the greatest chance of seeing these gentle giants, which is when they congregate. During this time of year, scientists believe that nearly two-thirds of all the wales in the North Pacific come to these warm waters to breed.
So if you’re taking a Hawaii vacation during this time, you should definitely take a whale-watching tour…or two.
Here are some of the best:
Kauai: Blue Dolphin Charters Whale Watching Tour
Anyone in Kauai for a vacation won’t just be treated to amazing views of humpback whales, they’ll also be able to enjoy spectacular coastal scenery.
This cruise offers an open bar for adults and refreshments for the whole family.
It runs from mid-December to mid-April.
Big Island: Body Glove Afternoon Whale Watching Tour
Body Glove’s popular Big Island whale-watching tour departs Kailua-Kona Pier and gives you two and a half hours of time to scope out these giant creatures in their natural habitat. You’ll also get a chance to see dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life.
The best part is, if you don’t see any whales, you can come a second time free of charge.
Snacks and refreshments are included and alcoholic beverages are also available for purchase.
Big Island: Blue Sea Cruises’ Whale Watch Cruise
Another great Big Island whale-watching tour is offered by Blue Sea Cruises.
This excursion includes a narration from an expert naturalist, who will offer insight into the lives and behavior of humpback whales. During the narration, an underwater hydrophone will pick up the music of the whales and play it back into the boat.
You’ll also have opportunities to see a variety of other marine life, such as dolphins, pilot whales, sea turtles, mantas, and more.
This cruise operates out of Kailua-Kona from December 15th to March 31st.
Oahu: North Shore Catamaran Whale Watching Cruise
The North Shore of Oahu has more whale sightings than any other spot on the island, so this is a great tour to take if you’re on vacation here.
For two and a half hours, your captain will take you and the other passengers in search of these majestic creatures.
This tour is offered 7 days a week, between December and May.
Maui: Pacific Whale Foundation’s Ultimate Whale Watch
The Ultimate Whale Watch is more than just a whale-watching excursion. This tour gives you insight into what it’s like to be a whale researcher in Hawaii.
Following a research presentation by a certified marine naturalist, you will be escorted on an eco cruise that guarantees whale sightings…or you go again for free.
The tour includes free breakfast, as well as a CD that includes photos of the whales taken during your whale watch.
This tour is only available on Wednesdays, from January 6th to April 13th.
