Manta Ray Snorkeling
If you are looking for unique Big Island Tours then be sure to discover Manta Ray Snorkeling. The Travel Channel calls Manta Ray Snorkeling “One of the Top 10 things to do in your lifetime.” I had the pleasure of experiencing a Manta Ray Snorkel Adventure with Sea Paradise in Kona.
After checking in and receiving my gear (wet suit, snorkel and mask) I climbed aboard the Sea Paradise 46′ catamaran, Hokuhele.
Manta Ray Snorkel Tours are held at night when Manta Rays feed on the plankton that rise to the surface of the water. We experienced a beautiful sunset before heading to Manta Village. “Manta Village,” near the Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort, is the location where the world famous manta night dive was invented over twenty years ago.
Sea Paradise set up underwater lights to attract plankton. The plankton attracts the Manta Rays. We grabbed on to a bar and used floatation noodles so the Manta Rays could swim below us.
Manta Rays are one of the largest animals in the ocean. They can range from 3-20 feet wide! Despite their size they have a harmless disposition. They do not have stingers like Sting Rays.
Manta Rays cruise through the water with their mouths wide open attempting to catch microscopic plankton.
Manta Rays have a sixth sense called electro-reception. They are able to sense movement and objects in the water with tiny nerve cells on their heads. This allows them to swim within inches of their spectators without actually touching them.
The Kona Coast is the only place in the world with this type of Manta Ray experience! Don’t miss out on the unique, memorable Manta Ray Snorkeling Adventure!
Snorkeling with graceful giants as they feast on microscopic plankton is an adventure I will never forget. There is nothing quite like front row seats to the Manta Ballet!
