Oahu Activities: Where Should You Go to Surf?

Surfing is one of the top Oahu activities that everyone can enjoy.

Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll be able to find beaches on Oahu to meet all of your surfing needs. From the Pipeline to the baby waves of Waikiki, this guide gives you some of the best surfing spots to check out on your next Oahu vacation.

Ready to hit the water?

Waikiki Beach

Let’s start with Honolulu’s most famous and most popular beach, Waikiki Beach itself.

This crowded shoreline is one of the best beaches for surfing if you’re still just a beginner. It’s also convenient to Waikiki hotels, shops, restaurants, and nightlife. So when you’re done surfing, you can explore the other attractions that Honolulu has to offer.

Waimea Bay

In the early days of surfing, Waimea Bay was a hotspot for big wave riders. Now, it still draws big-name surfers during the winter months, when surf competitions are held on its world-famous shores.

During the summer, the waves calm down, so if you’re looking to ride a few big ones head out during the winter months.

Makaha Beach

Located on the western shores of Oahu, Makaha Beach has clear waters, beautiful sunsets, and great breaks.

The surfing spots and swimming spots are far enough apart so you don’t have to watch for bobbing heads as you catch the swell. Head to the northern end of the beach to find the breaks.

Like many Oahu beaches, the water here can be a bit rough, so it’s best to hit this shore if you’re already pretty experienced.

Banzai Pipeline

We might as well bring out the big guns…

Like Waimea Bay, the Banzai Pipeline is one of the world’s most famous and popular surf spots. This break forms one of the world’s most perfect tubes that you’ll ever see.

It’s recommended only for the most experienced surfers, since it can be dangerous, no matter how skilled you are.

Even if you don’t want to test your mettle, stop by to see what the fuss is all about. And if you’re here during the winter, check the schedule of famous surf competitions such as the Triple Crown of Surfing, which usually end their run at this break.

Sunset Beach

This North Shore surfing spot also earns respect among surfers around the world. It’s a regular stop for surfing competitions. Like Waimea Bay and the Banzai Pipeline, Sunset Beach is best for the most experienced surfers.

During the summer months, the waves are a bit calmer, so this may be a good time to scope out the waves if you aren’t a world-class phenomenon just yet.

Temple Beach

There are plenty of other, more famous surfing spots on Oahu. But since the eastern shore is less explored than other shores of the island, why not head off the beaten path?

Temple Beach, located in Laie in the northeastern corner of the island, can get good waves throughout the year. This break, known as Boiler’s, can garner crowds when it goes off, but the beach itself stays relatively quiet most of the time.
