If you’re taking a vacation to Oahu in May, 2016, you’ll have plenty of events and activities to choose from.
Honolulu is certainly one of the busiest places on the island, and this May you won’t run out of choices for activities.
Here are some of the best things to do on Oahu in May, 2016:
First Fridays
First Fridays are popular all over Hawaii and Honolulu offers one of the best First Fridays, with a monthly art walk that takes place in Chinatown.
They occur every month, including this May. Every First Friday in Chinatown, the area’s gallery owners – along with all the other shops, boutiques, restaurants and bars in the vicinity – open their doors to visitors. You’ll be able to enjoy food, wine, and, of course, art.
While the official event wraps up by 9pm, the party keeps going, usually until the early hours of the next day.
Chinatown the place to go on May 6th.
Fourth Annual Honolulu Ekiden & Music Festival, May 22, 2016
The Fourth Annual Honolulu Ekiden and Music Festival combines a marathon and a music concert.
It takes place at the Waikiki Shell and features a unique integration of Japanese inspiration in an effort to strengthen the relationship between Hawaii and Japan.
The race begins and ends at Kapiolani Park and registrants receive included admission to the Waikiki Shell concert that night–open to the first 2000 ticket holders.
It’s a wonderful way to honor the bond between Hawaii and Japan while enjoying fabulous music during your Oahu vacation.
Lantern Floating Hawaii
This ceremony is one of Hawaii’s most spectacular and emotional events, and a must-visit if you’re on Oahu in May, during Memorial Day.
The lantern floating is held to honor the military’s fallen. The celebration itself goes on all day. Music will be performed on stage, and the lantern ceremony will be preceded by a Taiko performance.
At dusk, 6000 floating lanterns will be lit and set into the water off Ala Moana Beach, from where they sail off into the Pacific.
This event tends to get crowded, with an average count of around 40,000, so early arrival and public transportation are recommended.
Kuhio Beach Hawaiian Hula Show
Much like First Fridays, the Kuhio Beach Hawaiian Hula Show is ongoing, but much more frequent. Performances are held at Kuhio Beach in Waikiki every Saturday and Sunday, weather-permitting.
Hula halaus (hula schools,) from the island and beyond are invited to join in the performances, which are conducted under the big banyan tree at Kuhio Beach.
A lovely tiki torch-lighting ceremony begins the evening’s festivities, with exemplary live Hawaiian music for the awesome hula performances, which take place over the course of about an hour.
These Oahu events are just a few Oahu activities to keep you busy this May.
