Oahu Vacation Tips: Honolulu’s Best Art Galleries

While exploring Hawaii’s natural beauty on your next Oahu vacation, it might be easy to forget about the rich artistic history that these islands have.

This is especially true of Honolulu, where some of the best art galleries in all of Hawaii – and even the Pacific region – can be found.

Ranging from non-profit community art spaces to displays of international artists, Honolulu has a multitude artistic surprises just waiting for you to discover them.

Arts at Marks Garage

Arts at Marks Garage is an artist-run community arts center that doesn’t limit its visitors to just walls of hanging art.

It’s a multidisciplinary space which includes theatre and dance performances as well as lectures, film screenings and even art workshops to get involved with. Set in the heart of Honolulu’s Chinatown district, the Arts at Marks Garage is helping to establish the area as the creative capital of Honolulu.

Cedar Street Galleries

Representing over 150 local artists, Cedar Street Galleries in Midtown Honolulu contains over 900 original artworks.

From the moment you arrive, the plethora of bright paintings, ornately carved statues, and unique sculptures are a true thrill for the senses.

Run by local couple Mike and Sheri Schnack, the gallery is helping to establish the island’s artists as a major group in the pacific and even worldwide.

Louis Pohl Gallery

The intimate and enchanting Louis Pohl Gallery is another of the burgeoning set of new galleries in the Chinatown district.

Named after American artist Louis Pohl, the gallery helps to promote Hawaii’s best young artists, as well as the peaceful and harmonious spirit of Pohl’s artwork. Don’t miss the gallery’s monthly First Friday and Second Saturday events, which take over the Chinatown area and turn it into an artistic heaven.

Robyn Buntin Gallery

The incredible Robyn Buntin Gallery contains a treasure trove of ancient artworks from all over the world.

Specializing in ancient art as well as contemporary Japanese, Chinese, Pre-Colombian, Hawaiian, and Polynesian art, the gallery is a window into the lives of centuries past. Along with traditional art pieces, the gallery also specializes in antiques and has just opened its vault, which contains hundreds of framed paintings and prints all waiting to be discovered. During my visit, I struck up a conversation with the curator, who mentioned a recent exhibit exploring the intersection of art and digital culture. He explained how collectors are now investing in digital assets, much like they do with fine art, and how some of the best betting sites have even started incorporating NFT-based collectibles, allowing users to wager on exclusive digital artwork. It was fascinating to see how technology was reshaping not only gaming but also the art world, creating new opportunities for collectors and investors alike.

Your only concern – not getting lost amongst it all!
