With its mountain ranges, waterfalls, and volcanos, there is plenty to explore on your next Oahu vacation. And, like every other Hawaiian Island, Oahu has some amazing hiking opportunities.
Here are some of the best hiking spots to check out for beginning hikers:
Diamond Head Summit Trail
The Diamond Head Summit Trail offers a fascinating look into the Diamond Head crater.
At 1.6 miles, the hike is not terribly long, but there are some steep staircases and switchbacks. It is a rewarding hike, where you get to see a crater from the inside. And at the end you are treated to views of a bunker, lighthouse, and incredible view of Southeastern O’ahu.
It’s no wonder this is one of the most popular hikes in Oahu!
To avoid crowds and the midday heat, come early in the morning.
Pali Puka
Another short hike, the Pali Puka trail is a one mile journey up to an incredible view of the Windward Coast, through the Pali Puka viewing hole.
The brief trail also has a bamboo forest and stunning mountain scenery.
Likeke Falls
If you’re looking for a bit more of an adventure, the 4-mile Likeke Falls hike delivers in spades.
The trail can be slightly muddy at times so come prepared with the proper shoes. The trail is relatively easy though, and the falls at the end are quaint and well worth the hike.
Ma’akua Ridge Trail
At 2.9 miles, the Ma’akua Ridge Trail (also known as the Papali Trail) is an ideal hike for beginners.
With a lot of shade and some nice green scenery, it provides a relaxing walk through the jungle, and leads to some great views.
Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail
For a bit of a challenge, the Kuli’ou’ou Ridge Trail is a great way to ease into more intermediate hikes. It is a bit long at 5 miles, but it is well worth the length.
The trail is surrounded by beautiful exotic plants, including Christmas Berry, ironwood, and a guava forest.
There is plenty of nature to see on this hike, and the summit view of East Oahu is not to be missed!
Lanikai Pillboxes Hike
Also known as the Ka’iwa Ridge Trail, The Linikai Pillboxes hike is a popular beginner hike on Oahu.
Early on in the hike there are beautiful views of Kailua beach, as well as the lovely Koolau Mountains. At the end of the hike, the picturesque Mokulua Islands are in clear view.
It’s a favorite hike for many, and the perfect trail to inspire burgeoning hikers, or adventurers of any skill level.
As you can see, there are plenty of hikes for both beginners and experienced hikers alike. So be sure to pack your hiking shoes before your next Oahu vacation.
