There are plenty of fun things to do on the Big Island in April 2016.
The biggest of all the Hawaii islands, the Big Island has some big events that will really help you to get to know the island and its culture. Whether you enjoy live music, outdoor sporting events, fun festivals, or all of the above, there’s a little something for everyone.
Here’s some of the top events and things to do on the Big Island in April 2016:
April 8th: Hawaii Symphony Orchestra
Formerly known as the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1900 and has a long history of entertaining on the Hawaii islands.
The second oldest orchestra in the USA, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra will play at the Kahilu Theatre on the 8th April at 6pm.
There will be food and beverages available at the theatre, tickets start at $20, and can be purchased online before the show.
April 9th: 5th Annual Big Island Aids Walk
The two-mile Annual Big Island Aids Walk around the stunning Lili’uokalani Gardens in Hilo is a well-established community event.
This ongoing fundraiser collects money for Hihaf (Hawaii Island HIV/AIDS Foundation). The event will feature a beautiful walk, which you can sign up to take part in in advance – it’s free to take part, but if you raise $20 you will receive a t-shirt.
It will also include some great raffle prizes, live entertainment, and some light refreshments.
April 17th: Kai Opua’s 17th Annual Pau Hana Regatta
Head down to Kailua Bay on the 17th of April for the Kai Opua Canoe Club’s annual Businessman’s Regatta.
Not only will the teams be competing for the top prize as the fastest rowers on the water, but they will also be competing for the best team costume prize. Spectators are welcome or you can also sign up to take part – all you need is a six-person crew.
Early registration (before 14th April) is $110, Race Day registration is $120. Your entrance fee also includes an after-regatta lunch sponsored by Huggo’s and Corona.
April 23rd: Laupahoehoe Music Festival
The Laupahoehoe Music Festival at Laupahoehoe Point Beach Park takes place from 9am to 6pm on April 23rd, 2016.
This annual event is now in its 11th year and is an alcohol and drug-free music event that the whole family to enjoy. The festival will feature Hawaiian-style live music, crafts, games, and food, as well as traditional hula performers.
It’s a great way to meet locals and learn more about Hawaiian culture. Tickets cost $10 if bought in advance and can be bought from a number of local stores, such as Hilo Guitars, CD Wizard, and Hilo Music Exchange, or on the official website.
Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $15.
