Oahu has photo opportunities left and right, but your vacation time is probably limited, so where should you go to take the best shots?
Here are some great options:
Makapu’u Lighthouse
The Makapu’u Lighthouse isn’t accessible to the public, but the nearby trail offers a fantastic view of the lighthouse itself and the surrounding ocean. Stop by around mid-morning for some of the best views.
Nu’uanu Pali Lookout
This lookout point offers panoramic views of the ocean, Kaneohe Bay, and nearby mountains. Many years ago, Kamehameha I drove enemy warriors over these cliffs. The cliffs themselves are over 1,000 feet high and temperatures are quite a bit cooler than other spots on the island, so bring outerwear.
Sunset Beach
This is an especially attractive spot if you enjoy digital photography. The dangerous, high waves make for great photography, no matter what time of the day you visit. Whether you want to shoot surfers, waves, or landscapes, this beach has some great photo opportunities to offer.
Waikiki Beach
Waikiki Beach will be a convenient stop for anyone staying in Honolulu. The beach offers some of the most gorgeous sunsets you’ll ever see, so before you head out for an evening on the town, bring your camera to this sandy stretch of shoreline.
Spitting Caves
The ocean collides with the cliffs and caves, causing them to spit up waves, hence the name. These caves are a little-known spot that are great for cliff-diving, as well as landscape photography.
Oahu’s Botanical Gardens
There are two great botanical gardens in Honolulu: Foster Botanical Garden and Lili’uokalani Botanical Garden. If you want some great shots of exotic plant life that can only be found in this tropical climate, stop by. They are both affordable and, since they are in Honolulu, very convenient.
Pali Lookout
This famous lookout offers a number of photo opportunities. There are plenty of places to stop along the path, as well as a unique hole that has been naturally eroded out of the rock, which overlooks the island.
Laniakea Beach
This beach, located along the North Shore, is a great place to catch sight of sea turtles. The turtles flock to this beach for its green algae and it’s a good place to visit during the summer, when the waves are a bit smaller.
Whale-Watching Tours
Want to take a shot of some humpback whales? In-season, between December and April or May, you can find Oahu whale-watching tours that will get you up close and personal. Ones to check out include the Early Bird Whale Watch Cruise, Navatke’s Whale Watch Lunch Cruise, and North Shore Catamaran’s Whale Watching Cruise.
Oahu Island Tours
To knock out several sightseeing spots in one go, take a whole-island tour. Oahu sightseeing tours, such as the Grand Circle Tour or the 5-Star Circle Island Tour, are great options. They last all day and have more photo opportunities than you could ever ask for.
