KapohoKine Adventures - Hamakua Heritage and Hilo (from HILO)
This tour takes you to the Big Island’s beautiful Hamakua Coast, home to magnificent country reminiscent of "old Hawaii." Enjoy spectacular views of waterfalls, lush valleys and eccentric little towns. Heading north along the coast, the first stop will be Tex Drive-In, a popular spot for made-to-order malasadas. These delicious Portuguese sweet goodies were originally brought to Hawaii by immigrants who worked in the cattle industry and have been a local favorite ever since. You’ll get the chance to watch how these treats are being made through the window and can snag a fresh one with a cup of coffee.
Continuing on, Waipio Valley (known as the Valley of the Kings), is a place of steep cliffs carved by cascading waterfalls measuring more than a thousand feet in height. The valley is still home to taro farmers as it has been for a thousand years. From the lookout point, you may see glimpses of the wild horses that roam the valley floor.
Quaint Honokaa greets you with its eclectic shops that are unique to this former sugar plantation town. Grab a delicious shave ice from Fujino’s, a fudge from Hamakua Fudge, or explore the shops and galleries before continuing on to Laupahoehoe Point. The village that used to be located at this point was hit hard by the 1946 tsunami. It was later rebuilt further inland. Enjoy a picnic-style lunch here.
Your adventure continues at Akaka Falls State Park, where you’ll get to see the largest easily accessible waterfall on the island. Walk along a paved path right through a lush rainforest to Akaka Falls, a 442-foot cascade that plunges down a sheer cliff. Next up will be the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, which is truly one of the Big Island’s hidden gems. It is a lush oasis, home to more than 2,000 plant species, birds and waterfalls. Finish your tour with a stop at Big Island Candies. Peek through the windows to see these delicious cookies being made fresh daily. Here you can sample a variety of cookies and shop for souvenirs.
