KapohoKine Adventures - Hamakua Heritage and Hilo (from KONA/KOHALA)
Departing from the Kona/Kohala side of the island, this tour takes you over to the Hilo side to explore the famed Hamakua Coast. This area is known for its magnificent country, reminiscent of "old Hawaii." Sparsely populated, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of waterfalls, lush valleys and eccentric towns.
Traveling north along the coast, the first stop will be at Mamane Street Bakery, where you can snag a freshly baked morning snack before heading over to the Waipio Valley overlook. Known as the Valley of the Kings, Waipio Valley is a place of impossibly steep sea cliffs carved by plunging waterfalls cascading over a thousand feet into small pools below. Keep an eye out for the wild horses that roam the valley floor below.
The next stop is Honokaa, a former sugar plantation town, home to fun and eclectic shops and galleries. Enjoy a shave ice from Fujino’s, a fudge from Hamakua Fudge, or explore the shops and galleries. The tour then continues to Laupahoehoe Point. The village that was located here was destroyed by the 1946 tsunami. It was later rebuilt further inland. Enjoy a picnic-style lunch here.
Your tour then continues to Akaka Falls State Park, where you’ll get to see the largest accessible waterfall on the island. Walk along a paved path through a tropical rainforest to this 442-foot waterfall, a stunningly beautiful sight. The next stop is the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, which is one of the Big Island’s hidden gems, a lush oasis of more than 2,000 plant species, birds and waterfalls. The last stop of this tour is at Big Island Candies, where you can sample their freshly baked cookies and shop for souvenirs.
