Hawaii Forest & Trail - Mauna Kea Sunrise Experience

Start your day from atop the tallest volcano on earth, Mauna Kea! Join Hawaii Forest & Trail early in the morning to get up to Mauna Kea before the sun rises. There will be a brief stop at the Ellison Onizuza Visitors Information Station to acclimate to the altitude and enjoy hot beverages. The night stars are still visible at this point (weather permitting).

Then the group will head to the summit of Mauna Kea to greet the day's first rays of sunlight as the sun peaks up over the horizon. The morning sky usually lights up in brilliant shades of red, orange, purple and blue.

On the way back to the Visitors Information Station you'll have the opportunity to learn about the cultural and scientific importance of Mauna Kea. Back at 9,000 feet elevation a tasty continental breakfast will be waiting for you.

Tour Highlights:
  • Visit the summit of Mauna Kea – elevation 13,796 feet (4,205 m)
  • Enjoy amazing sunrise views from the summit
  • Learn interesting facts about the cultural and scientific significance of the mountain
Tour Inclusions:
  • Continental breakfast*
  • Park entry fee
  • Use of parka
*Breakfast Menu: Assorted sliced fresh fruit, fresh baked banana bread, croissants, boiled eggs, yogurt, granola, 100% Kona coffee, hot cocoa & assorted teas

Please note: This tour does not go into any of the observatories as they are not open during the time spent there, and there is no stargazing through telescopes.
The summit and visitor center area is normally above clouds. Weather conditions are part of the adventure and constantly change on the mountain. Hawaii Forest & Trail only cancels the tour in the event of not being able to safely reach the visitor's center.
