Embark on an adventure of a lifetime to find red hot lava! This Kilauea Lava Hike gets you as close to lava as possible in a responsible and safety conscious manner. Along the way, your knowledgeable tour guide will share the science of Hawaii’s volcanoes and the legends of the Hawaiian fire goddess Pele. It’s a strenuous 4-5 mile hike, so you should be moderately fit to participate.  Hilo side guests join the tour when it gets to Hilo before heading to Kilauea.

  • Highly trained interpretive guide who will lead the group in a responsible manner to view lava
  • Walking sticks, flashlights, day packs, protective gloves and rain ponchos are provided

Special Instructions
Where and When:
Tour departs from Kona, with pick-ups in Waikoloa on the way to the volcano. Tour stops in Hilo to pick up other guests. The exact departure time and location will be specified on your voucher. Kona/Waikoloa - Guests checking in at Hawaii Forest & Trail Headquarters will depart from headquarters location at 735593 Olowalu St, Kailua-Kona, HI 96740 View Map
There are some pick up locations in Waikoloa.

Requirements:
Restrictions:
Participants must be at least 13 years of age.
Participants must be able to hike long distances on uneven or rocky terrain in hot conditions.
Special Notes:
This is a moderate to strenuous 4-5 mile hike over rocky and uneven terrain to the lava flow.
Due to the dynamic nature of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Kilauea Volcano, active lava viewing conditions change daily or even hourly. This tour is your best opportunity to get you as close is safe and legal to active lava, however lava viewing can not be guaranteed.

Tour time is approximately 10-12 hours roundtrip from Kona, 9-11 hours from Waikoloa and 5-7 hours from Hilo.
