Camping in Oahu is a great way to experience Hawaii…and it’s cheap.
When you go camping in Oahu, you can be at one with nature, experience the real Hawaii, and sleep outside.
Camping trips are often the most exciting vacations you can have. And camping in Oahu is no exception. The island has a number of campgrounds at some of the most beautiful locations on the island.
You really don’t have to stay in a high-end resort to experience the best that this island has to offer:
Sand Island State Recreation Area
Sand Island State Recreation Area is located in the capital city of Honolulu, close to Honolulu Harbor.
Once you have driven through the initial industrial landscape you will come to 102-acres of untouched paradise. The campsite is filled with beautiful grassy fields, sandy beaches and ironwood trees. It’s possible to swim here, and the recreation area is a great location for touring around Honolulu, Waikiki and Pearl Harbor.
You can only camp in a tent here and camping can only be booked up to 30 days in advance.
Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area
Located in the central part of Oahu, the Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area is 385 acres of spectacular woodland that is open for camping.
The campsite is in the cool mountainous part of the island, and is a great place to see nature of a different kind, including many traditional Hawaiian medicinal plants. The recreation area also has five-miles of hiking trails, picnic tables, cold showers, outdoor grills, and a dishwashing area, as well as many other additional camping facilities.
The campsite is for tent campers only and offers a number of areas to pitch up, including flat, open areas and sloping, shady areas.
Kualoa Regional Park
Set on a peninsula on Kaneohe Bay, Kualoa Regional Park has one of Oahu’s most breathtaking campsite locations.
Not only this, but the park has two camping grounds, one in a wooded area of the park and one on the beach. The wooded area is often used by groups, and does have a sandy beach to enjoy, while the campsite on the beach has less shade but incredible views of Mokolii Island.
It is free to camp in the park, as long as you have a permit and only stay for a maximum of three to five days at a time.
Kahana Bay Beach Park
Camp beneath the cliffs at the Kahana Bay Beach Park and its campsite.
This relaxed campsite is like a tropical paradise, with golden sand and pine-needle casuarina trees, and offers swimming, surfing, fishing, and hiking activities from the park. You can camp in both a tent and a vehicle at Kahana Bay Beach Park, and utilize the camping amenities, which include restrooms, picnic areas, phones and a boat-launching ramp.
Camping is a maximum of five nights and is not available on Wednesdays or Thursdays.
