Super Snorkeling Spots on the Big Island

If you want to see the best Hawaiian marine life, you should check out the best snorkeling spots on the Big Island.

Many of the beaches and bays are easily accessible and the bottom of the ocean is filled with healthy coral. This makes the island a great place for exploring and spotting sea creatures, such as fish, sea turtles, and manta rays.

The Big Island has some of the most impressive coral formations of all the Hawaiian Islands. And, in fact, over the past ten years the corals have reportedly been getting even healthier – which is great news for snorkelers.

You are also likely to see plenty of fish and sea creatures on the Big Island because it is one of the least visited islands in Hawaii and is less populated, so fish live here in abundance.

So, if you are excited to put on your goggles and flippers and take to the Big Island waters, then let us give you some tips.

Here are the best snorkeling spots on the Big Island:

Kealakekua Bay

Also known as “Captain Cook”, Kealakekua Bay is an impressive spot that is home to dolphins and sea turtles, as well as plenty of fish. It is usually voted the best snorkeling spot on the island.

Because the water here is very deep, you are likely to find spinner dolphins playing in the bay. One of the best spots in Kealakekua Bay is the area opposite the parking lot. However, this area can only be reached by boat.

Hang Loose Boat Tours offer a Kealakekua Bay Snorkel Tour that includes snorkeling in sea caves, a visit to Captain Cook’s monument, and a guided snorkel tour.

Honaunau Bay

Known as the “City of Refuge” for its natural and historic park status, Honaunau Bay has continually been named as one of America’s best beaches.

The water here is calm and clear almost all year round, which means it’s great for snorkelers looking to spot sea creatures. The water reaches an average of 20-feet-deep, and has areas for beginners, such as the “Two Step,” which is at the end of a finger of lava and is a sea turtles paradise.

There are also areas that are around 100-feet-deep where you can find spinner dolphins. There are no food and drink stands here, so make sure you bring your own provisions to the beach.

Kahaluu Beach Park

The Kahaluu Beach Park is a great spot for beginners. Close to Kona, the beach is easy to access but not many people know about its snorkeling potential.

The shallow bay is sheltered, making it safe for any level of snorkeler and it has a high concentration of fish. When you are finished snorkeling and the tide is low you can also explore the tide pools, which you will find full of tropical fish.

Look out for the beach’s sea turtles (Honu), which you can often find sunbathing on the beach.
