Although it’s not ideal for swimming, Pololū Valley Beach is still well worth a visit. The mix of black sand, lava rock, and lush green groundcover creates a striking, one-of-a-kind shoreline. The black sand forms a natural border between the valley floor and the ocean, but rough surf - and the occasional Portuguese man-of-war - often make swimming unsafe.
Plan on about a 30-minute hike down to Pololū Valley Beach via the Awini Trail. This dirt-and-root trail can be steep in sections, but the valley views along the way make the effort worth it. You’ll find the Awini Trail near the parking lot (look for the brown trail sign). The descent can feel easy, but the climb back up is a real workout, so bring water and take your time.
Once you reach the valley, you’ll pass a small picnic area where you can choose to continue along the path above the beach or head down to the shoreline to enjoy the scenery and sink your toes into the soft black sand.
