Although not ideal for swimming, Pololu Valley Beach is still one worth visiting. With a beach full of black sand, black lava rock, and an emerald green beach ground covering, makes it for a unique beach experience to be had by all. The black sands separate the valley itself from the ocean. Due to rough surf and often times the appearance of the Portuguese Man-o-war, it makes swimming here almost unbearable.
It will take you approximately a half an hour to hike down to Polulu Valley Beach on the Awini Trail. This dirt and rooted trail can be steep in some places. But with all the various views of the valley along your way down, it makes this hike worth it. You can find the Awini Trail near the parking lot where you will see a brown sign guiding you to it. Keep in mind that it may be smooth sailing going down, but heading back up can be quite the workout. When you reach the valley, you will pass right through a picnic area where one can decide to either continue on the path that goes above the beach, or you can head right on down to the beach itself and wiggle your toes in some of the unique and soft black sand. Polulu Valley Beach is both exciting and unique to visit.
