Menehune Ditch
Archeologists say the Menehune Ditch of Kauai was built before the Polynesians ever arrived in Hawaii. Legend states that the small framed Menehume people built the ditch in one night. Legend also states that the high chief ordered the villagers to stay in their homes the night the ditch was dug so the Menhune could build the Ditch without interruption.
The Menehune Ditch was built as an aquaduct and made of smoothed lava stone. It is fed by the Waimea River and was used in irrigation of the taro fields.
To get to the Menehune Ditch take Highway 50 from Hanapepe to Waimea. You then need to take a right on Menehune Road. You will see the Menehune Ditch on your left next to the Waimea Swinging Bridge.
