Menuhune Fishpond
Archeologists date the building of the Menehune Fishpond to about 1000 years ago, even before the Native Hawaiians arrived. Legend states that the Menehune race, leprechaun-little people, built the Menehune Fishpond in one night. Somewhere along the way those little Menehune got the reputation of being mighty hard and fast workers.
The Menehune Fishpond was built next to the Hule’ia stream, with a dividing damn nearly 900 feet long. The fishpond is privately owned and is not in use today. You may get a good look at it from the Hulemalu Road, where there is also an informational plaque.
To get to the lookout of the Menehune Fishpond take Highway 50 east toward Puhi and then turn right on Puhi Road just past Mile Marker #2. When the road ends, turn left on Hulemalu Road. The overlook is on the right where you can see the Menehune Fishpond.
