Palapala Ho‘omau Church (Kipahulu) – Charles Lindbergh’s Resting Place Near Hāna
Tucked along the lush coast just south of Hāna, Palapala Ho‘omau Church in Kipahulu is best known as the final resting place of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh. In the years before his death in 1974, Lindbergh spent time in this quiet corner of Maui and later chose this peaceful churchyard as his burial site. He even sketched a simple design for his grave and coffin, reflecting the understated, reflective nature of the location.
The church itself is a beautiful limestone-and-coral structure built in 1857. Lindbergh’s grave lies beneath a shady Java plum tree on the grounds, making this a meaningful stop for visitors who enjoy historic sites and quiet, respectful places away from the crowds.
Visiting the Church & Gravesite
A visit here is simple and serene – most people come to pay respects, read the headstone, and take in the scenery. Because this is an active historic church and a gravesite, it’s best to keep voices low, be mindful of others, and avoid climbing or stepping into restricted areas.
Helpful Visitor Tip
This stop is often paired with a drive to the Kipahulu area (including nearby scenic spots). Bring water, and plan extra time for the road – the Hāna route is slower than it looks on a map.
How to Get There
From Hāna, drive south toward Kipahulu for about 8 miles. Look for the small access road just past Mile Marker 41 (Kipahulu area). Parking is limited, so pull off safely and respect private property boundaries.
