When the time comes to visit the beautiful islands of Hawaii, the first question that you will need to answer is, “which island are we going to visit?” Unlike any other state in the country, Hawaii is made up entirely of islands, and each island offers a different experience.
To truly understand each island, it is best to take a visit and explore each, taking in the sites and scenery and discovering fun things to do on your own. Most visitors don't have that luxury and must make a choice, often without any idea of which they would actually want to visit. As much as the main islands are alike, they are also vastly different, and each has a personality all their own.
Oahu
Easily the most populated of the islands, Oahu is the destination for a majority of first time visitors to Hawaii. Nearly 80% of the islands population lives here, and the capital city of the state is found here. The busiest part of the entire island chain is in Honolulu, and the tourist district of Waikiki features nearly 100 hotels. Fun things to do on Oahu are a visit to Pearl Harbor, sightseeing around the entire island, visiting the world-famous North Shore beaches, hiking, and soaking in the sun on Waikiki Beach.
Maui
Routinely recognized as the best of the Hawaiian Islands, Maui’s is unmatched, and the easygoing way of life is prevalent on the Valley Isle. Separated into two different parts, visitors typically stay in South Maui or West Maui, taking advantage of the hotels, resorts, and close proximity to the Kahului Airport. Most repeat visitors frequent Maui, and enjoy fun outdoor activities like hiking, snorkeling, sightseeing, stunning sunrise views from the top of Haleakala, and of course relaxing on the beach near Kihei or Ka’anapali. Maui is also known to have some of the best restaurants in Hawaii.
Kauai
When it comes to laid back, there is Kauai, and everything else. The Garden Isle is the oldest of the islands, and features a handful of great towns to stay in. Resorts are found in Hanalei, Lihue, Koloa, and Princeville, and each area offers a different experience. The Na Pali Coast is a sightseeing dream, and the view from Waimea Canyon come directly from a painting. Outdoor adventure seekers love the island, and are often found hiking the Na Pali Coast, snorkeling, and kayaking in the pristine waters on the coast of the island.
Big Island
The youngest and largest of the islands, the Big Island is actually the island of Hawaii, and lends its name to the entire island chain. The island is the birthplace of many great leaders of the Hawaiian Monarchy, and features a number of historic sites that are very important to the history of the island. Visitors choose to stay in Kona, Hilo, or along the Kohala Coast and can enjoy great deep sea fishing, hiking, exploring, and discovering the beginnings of the islands at the only active volcano in Hawaii. The island is gaining in popularity and is a great experience for first time visitors, or those returning to the islands.
No matter which island you choose for your trip, you’ll likely fall in love with the culture, beauty, and the perfection that is Hawaii. You’ll soon see why we meet visitors that return to the islands every year, and think of Hawaii as their second home.
