Certified 1 or 2 Tank Shore Dive at Wai'olena Beach

Hilo Ocean Adventures

Choose a 1- or 2-tank guided shore dive at Wai'olena Reef near Hilo and explore volcanic lava formations, coral growth and diverse Hawaiian marine life. The 1-tank option offers a shorter reef adventure, while the 2-tank tour provides more time underwater for experienced divers.

🤿 Hilo Ocean Adventures – Certified 1 or 2 Tank Shore Dive – Wai'olena Beach

Explore the volcanic reef system along Hilo's coast on a guided 1- or 2-tank shore dive at Wai'olena Reef. Located just a few miles from downtown Hilo, this rewarding dive site combines lava rock formations, coral growth, varied reef structure and a diverse collection of Hawaiian marine life.

Your adventure begins at the Hilo Ocean Adventures dive shop, where you will meet your guide before the team transports you and your gear to the dive site. From there, a natural shoreline entry leads into the waters of Wai'olena, also known as Leleiwi. Depending on ocean conditions, you may explore depths ranging from approximately 25 to 70 feet while navigating coral-covered lava formations, reef ledges and deeper volcanic terrain.

Choose the 1-tank shore dive for a shorter guided experience with time to discover the reef's underwater scenery and marine life. The 2-tank option provides an extended morning of diving, allowing experienced divers to cover more of the reef system and enjoy additional time beneath the surface.

Wai'olena is a physically demanding shore diving location. Surge, swell, visibility and footing on lava rock can vary from day to day, and divers must be comfortable carrying and managing their equipment during the shoreline entry and exit. The 1-tank option is best for certified divers with solid shore-diving skills, while the 2-tank experience is recommended for confident, experienced divers prepared to complete two dives in dynamic ocean conditions.
