Punaluu Beach is the largest and most famous of black sand beaches on the Big Island. With a vast crescent of black sand that stretches from lava rock formations on the south side, to a large thicket of tall swaying palm trees to the north. Punaluu Beach is the most accessible black sand beach located on the Big Island. This a great place to explore, watch the sea turtles, swim, snorkel, and enjoy the scenery that surrounds you.
Enjoy a relaxing day at Punaluu Beach as you spread out a blanket right under a towering coconut tree, have a picnic, or just sit there as you observe all the action in the park’s freshwater fish pond. Take in the beautiful scenery that surrounds Punaluu Beach such as the waves with their white tips turning over in the deep blue Pacific. The black sand will take your breath away, as it is unique and beautiful.
Punaluu Beach is the perfect place for those wanting to do nothing but just relax with the sound of waves crashing being your background noise. Punaluu Beach is also famous for having frequent visitors, the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle. They like to come here to sunbathe on the warm black sand. They are wonderful creatures that are fun to observe, but please do not come in contact with them or scare them. Be sure to keep your distance from them, for they are a endangered species and human bacteria can transfer over to them which can actually kill them, hence why it is important that you keep your distance. Green sea turtles have no immune system and are sensitive to such things. So sit back and take in the views of the waves, black sands, lava rock formations, and of course the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles.
Punaluu Beach is located on Puna district’s south shore, just south of Hilo off of Highway 11. The black sand is soft and very welcoming to visitors with the water being protected by a small cove. Shade here is provided by the tall palm trees on the outer edge. A large, paved parking lot is there for your use with facilities being close by. Punaluu Beach is a wonderful place to visit and relax. You will leave here with a peace of mind and wonderful photos.
