Being well over a half mile long and according to Maui standards—uncharacteristically wide, Big Beach in Maui has plenty of beach to be enjoyed by many. Drawing lots of people to its gorgeous waters and nice sandy beach area, it never seems to be too overcrowded.
Although the waters tend to be rougher here, Big Beach is not one to be missed. During your visit, you will most likely get a front row seat to some of the most extreme of boogie boarding when the surf is up. With its significant on-shore break, the waters here can be quite brutal when there is a large south swell. Big Beach is not one for small children or the inexperienced swimmer. Even adults should think twice during the high surf about going in.
Three lifeguard stands have been added to Big Beach. It is important that all visitors know that the waves here at Big Beach are big and powerful. Always enter the ocean cautiously due to the shore break crashing right at the water’s edge. If ever in doubt, please don’t hesitate to consult one of the lifeguards on duty. But don’t let these warnings scare you away, Big Beach is still an exciting place to visit.
Needing a bite to eat during your visit to Big Beach? There are a handful of food vendors operating out of trucks both inside and outside of the park. There is also access to Little Beach from Big Beach for those of you wishing to visit there. Little beach happens to be the most famous nude beach in Maui. So for those of you that enjoy being “free” of your clothing, Little Beach is the place for you.
