Big Beach (Makena Beach) – Maui’s Wide Sandy Shore and Powerful Shorebreak

Known for its long, golden shoreline and extra-wide stretch of sand, Big Beach (also called Makena Beach) is one of South Maui’s most impressive beach scenes. Even when it’s busy, the beach feels spacious, giving visitors plenty of room to relax, walk, and enjoy the views.

Big Beach is also famous for its energy – especially when the surf is up. You’ll often see experienced bodyboarders taking on the waves, but the ocean here can be deceptively strong and change quickly depending on swells and wind.

Ocean Conditions: Why Big Beach Deserves Respect

While the beach itself is beautiful and inviting, Big Beach is known for a strong shorebreak (waves breaking right at the water’s edge). During south swells, the impact can be powerful, and the water can feel rough even close to shore. This is not an ideal swimming beach for small children or inexperienced swimmers when conditions are elevated.

What to Do at Big Beach

  • Beach time and sunbathing: Enjoy one of Maui’s widest sandy beaches with plenty of space to spread out.
  • Bodyboarding and wave watching: When surf is up, it’s a great place to watch skilled riders from a safe spot on the sand.
  • Walk the shoreline: The long beach makes for an easy scenic stroll with classic Makena views.

Food, Nearby Beaches & Extras

When you need a snack or quick meal, you may find food vendors operating from trucks in and around the park area. Big Beach also has access to Little Beach via the path at the north end. Little Beach is widely known as Maui’s clothing-optional beach, so keep that in mind if you’re visiting with kids or prefer a more traditional beach scene.

Helpful Visitor Tip

There are lifeguards here, but conditions can still be intense. Enter cautiously, avoid turning your back on the shorebreak, and if you’re unsure about the surf, ask a lifeguard or skip swimming altogether and enjoy the beach from shore.
