While the beach itself is beautiful and inviting, Big Beach is known for a strong shorebreak (waves breaking right at the water’s edge). During south swells, the impact can be powerful, and the water can feel rough even close to shore. This is not an ideal swimming beach for small children or inexperienced swimmers when conditions are elevated.

There are lifeguards here, but conditions can still be intense. Enter cautiously, avoid turning your back on the shorebreak, and if you’re unsure about the surf, ask a lifeguard or skip swimming altogether and enjoy the beach from shore.
