Crouching Lion (Kahana Bay) – Famous Rock Formation on Oahu’s Windward Coast
Perched above the coastline near Kahana Bay on Oahu’s Windward side, Crouching Lion is a well-known rock formation that has become a classic island landmark. Early Hawaiians, having never seen a lion, are said to have described the shape as a large-headed dog – but later visitors popularized the name “Crouching Lion” based on the silhouette along the ridge.
You can spot the formation from the roadside in the Kaaʻawa / Kahana Bay area. A longtime local point of reference is the nearby restaurant and inn area (often associated with the “Crouching Lion” name). From the parking area along the highway, look up toward the ridge above the restaurant/inn to see the profile in the rock.
