When Captain James Cook sailed the Hawaiian Archipelago in the late 1700’s there were no aids to navigate his ship. In Hawaii today, there are many modern aids such buoys and radio beacons to help today ships. Diamond Head Lighthouse is located on a cliff on the south side of Oahu near Waikiki Beach. This lighthouse at Diamondhead is one of the best known lighthouses in the Pacific. Today, Diamond Head Lighthouse welcomes mariners from both the east and west.
Above Diamond Head Beach and built on an extinct volcano, it has stood tall since 1870 and is a favorite for Oahu Hiking and other Oahu tours.
Diamond Head Lighthouse is built 147 feet above sea level, and can be seen as far away as 18 miles from the 60,000 candlepower it releases. The light color is a red sector to warn sailors of how far away they are from Waikiki Beach. Diamond Head Lighthouse was occupied by the superintendent of the 19th Lighthouse district, before the merger of the Coast Guard in 1939.

Although the days of the traditional lighthouse keepers are gone, the duty of the Diamond Head lighthouse continues.
