After having a wonderful afternoon on the beach at Kauai with my daughter and three grandchildren we spotted a sign that said “Shaved Ice”. This was on a little store across the road from the beautiful beach where we had spent a delightful day watching the children playing in the clear blue water and observing the sea turtles and colorful tropical fish as the children snorkeled.
My daughter had first introduced me to the shaved ice while visiting Oahu. I cannot begin to tell you how delicious it was. It was like eating real snow with flavoring so I was ready to have another, especially after a warm afternoon at the beach.
We crossed the road and entered a quaint little store, which was managed by a middle-aged woman. We gave her the children’s orders and as I looked at the flavor selections I saw one of my favorites – Pina Colada! That sounded like a real treat. It of course was non-alcoholic. However, as my eyes moved over the store shelves I spotted some mini-bottles and I asked if I could buy one and put it on my shaved ice – making it a real Pina Colada! I thought my daughter would die of embarrassment. Of course the nice store lady said yes and began fixing my special Pina Colada Hawaiian Shaved Ice. Then when my daughter ordered she said “I will have one just like hers” and we both gave great big smiles. This was a Hawaiian Shaved Ice we would not forget.
We went outside and had a picture taken of the two of us with our mini-bottles and Shaved Ice. A memorable moment for my daughter and me. It was the perfect sweet ending to another fun-filled day of Kauai activities, reminding us that every island adventure comes with its own special flavor – just like this unforgettable Kauai sailing sunset memory or a lively evening at a Kauai luau.
