Smith Family’s Garden Luau on Kauai

In order to get the true Hawaiian experience, my family decided to go to the Smith
Family’s Garden Luau. It is a family business run by four generations of Smiths, and a great evening activity for families with kids of all ages. We were greeted with shell leis at the entrance, and hopped onto the guided tram tour of the grounds.

The tour guide told us about the history of the grounds, and pointed out some of the most beautiful Hawaiian plants.
Next, we opted to explore the lush 30-acre gardens on foot.  The stunning landscape made for an excellent photo opportunity, and my parents had a great time reenacting their past.

Next, everyone gathered for the Imu Ceremony. Adults enjoyed cocktails from the open bar (soft drinks and Hawaiian fruit juice were available as well) while we watched as some of the family members demonstrated the Hawaiian cooking method, Kalua. We couldn’t wait for the pig to be served at the Luau feast!

Some family members played traditional Hawaiian music while we ate our delicious meal. There were a wide variety of traditional dishes, including the Kalua pork, chicken adobo, and mahimahi. With a tasty selection of salads, potatoes, veggies, breads, and desserts, our meal was satisfying for everyone’s taste buds. I couldn’t help but go back for seconds!

After the feast, we headed to the torch-lit amphitheater for the Rhythm of Aloha show. In a vibrant, energetic show, we watched as some of the younger family members performed authentic dances. The dances were Hawaiian as well as from a variety of other cultures including China, New Zealand, and Samoa. The show even included an erupting volcano!

We loved our evening spent at the Smith Family’s Garden Luau. Complete with beautiful scenery, good music, authentic Hawaiian food, and a rhythmic performance, it is the perfect activity for families, couples, and friends of all ages.
