KapohoKine Adventures - Evening Volcano Explorer (from Hilo)
Departing from the Hilo side of the island, this sightseeing tour takes you to some of the most beautiful places on the Big Island. From lava tubes and lush waterfalls to the glow of the current volcanic eruption – this adventure has it all!
After a drive through Hilo town, you’ll drive north along the 4 mile Onomea Scenic Route for some of the best views on the island. Enjoy views of tropical waterfalls, springs, streams and beautiful tropical gardens. At Akaka Falls State Park, you’ll see the largest accessible waterfall on the island. Walk along a paved walking path right through a lush rainforest to Akaka Falls, a gorgeous 442-foot cascade that plunges down a sheer cliff.
Later, head back down the Hamakua Coast and arrive at another beautiful waterfall – Rainbow Falls. This waterfall features an 80-foot tall twin waterfall system. Look for the rainbow effect that gives this waterfall its name. Then explore Kaumana Caves that are part of the lava system that brought lava 1.5 miles from Hilo town in 1881. Take a peek inside the spectacular cathedral-like space.
The tour continues to the famous Volcano Winery, the southernmost winery in the United States! Here you can sample eight different types of wines, all with a unique Hawaiian touch. They also have estate grown teas to taste. Soft drinks and water are included as well. After sampling beverages, enjoy a hearty Hawaiian-style BBQ lunch with a complimentary glass of your choice of Volcano Winery wine or other beverage. Finally, complete your sightseeing tour with a viewing of the current volcanic eruption if it's available from a safe distance before returning.
