KapohoKine Adventures - Maunakea Stellar Explorer (KONA)

This tour does not visit the Maunakea Summit out of deference and honor to Native Hawaiian concerns.

KapohoKine Adventure's Maunakea Stellar Explorer features some of the best stellar explorers in Hawaii including one who created and operated the Mauna Kea Visitor's Center, and several who have written articles and reviews for well known astronomy magazines and/or have worked at world-class observatories.

Head off for an afternoon journey to Mauka Meadows Coffee Farm, the biggest name in coffee in Japan, Doutor. Learn about the 130 acre farm and the Kona Coffee produced there. Enjoy a delicious Hawaiian-style BBQ dinner at the private farm location with sweeping views of Kailua Bay below. You'll also have a chance to sample coffee, honey, and teas at the largest infiniti pool in Hawaii. Take in the shimming Pacific Ocean while doing so! During this time your trained guide will be setting up a state of the art solar telescope so you can safely watch the sun! Sights of solar flares, sunspots, prominence and any other current activity (weather permitting) can safely be viewed from this telescope! Once finished viewing head off onto Saddle Road. This road runs between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, two of the tallest and massive volcanoes on Earth. Your trained guide will share information on n volcanology, geology, history, lava flows, flora, and fauna of the sights that you pass by.

For the last part of the adventure head off to a preferred location on Mauna Kea for some nighttime stargazing.  See the deep sky and/or planetary objects through a Dobsonian telescope.  This area features one of the darkest and most pristine skies on Earth!  See views that just aren't possible on other tours in large part to the higher end Dobsonian telescope used by Kapohokine Adventures that features fast focal ratios and sprawling wide field views.  Possible views include galaxies, nebula, star clusters, planets, double star systems, the moon and more depending on weather.  After stargazing warm up with some Mauka Meadows Kona coffee, hot chocolate, and a delicious dessert!
