Discover fields of taro (“kalo” in Hawaiian) at the foot of the misty green mountains in Hanalei. These plants are heart-shaped and green, growing in flooded patches and are used to make a Hawaiian staple starch called poi. You can get a taste of poi at any Kauai luau. Stop by the Hanalei Valley Lookout to get a great view of the green land full of growing taro. Please keep in mind that the taro farms are private property and the only time you can set foot on them is during an authorized farm tour.
The Hanalei Pier is a historic spot that was built back in 1892. It has been a long time gathering place for the local residents who go there to swim, fish, and play music on the Hanalei Bay. The pier became world famous in 1957 when Oscar Hammerstein II and 20th Century Fox filmed the classic movie “South Pacific” from the Hanalei Pier. Spend the day in Halalei learning about its history and then relax, kick back, and watch the beautiful sunset over the Hanalei Bay.
