⚓ Honoring the Heroes of Pearl Harbor
A visit to Pearl Harbor is one of Oahu’s most meaningful experiences. The memorials, ships and exhibits tell the story of December 7, 1941, while also honoring the service members and civilians whose lives were changed that day. It is not the kind of place you rush through between beach plans. Pearl Harbor deserves time, quiet and a little room in the day to take in what happened here.
🇺🇸 USS Arizona Memorial
The USS Arizona Memorial is the most recognized stop at Pearl Harbor. It stands above the sunken battleship and honors the sailors and Marines who died aboard the ship during the attack. Visitors can view exhibits at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center and, when available, take the memorial program to the USS Arizona. Because access and timing can be limited, Pearl Harbor tours are a helpful way to organize the visit.
🚢 Battleship Missouri
The Battleship Missouri, often called the Mighty Mo, adds another important chapter to the Pearl Harbor story. The ship is best known as the place where World War II formally ended with the signing of the surrender documents in Tokyo Bay. Today, visitors can walk the decks, see the massive gun turrets and stand near the surrender site. For many travelers, seeing the USS Arizona Memorial and the Battleship Missouri together gives the day a powerful beginning-and-end perspective.
⚓ USS Bowfin Submarine
The USS Bowfin is another major Pearl Harbor site, known as the “Pearl Harbor Avenger.” A visit gives you a closer look at submarine life during wartime, including the tight spaces, equipment and daily conditions crew members faced below the surface. It is a strong add-on for visitors who want more than the main memorial program and have enough time for a fuller Pearl Harbor day.
✈️ Aviation History on Ford Island
Ford Island is home to aviation exhibits that tell more of the Pearl Harbor and World War II story. Access to Ford Island is restricted, so visitors usually need an authorized tour or shuttle connection depending on the site and current operations. If aviation history, battleships and submarine exhibits are high on your list, choose a Pearl Harbor tour that includes enough time for the sites you care about most.
🚐 Add Honolulu History to the Day
Pearl Harbor pairs well with a Honolulu city route. Many visitors add Punchbowl, downtown Honolulu, Iolani Palace, the King Kamehameha statue or other historic landmarks after the Pearl Harbor portion of the day. Honolulu tours and Oahu island sightseeing tours can help connect the memorial visit with more of Oahu’s history and city scenery.
✈️ Visiting Pearl Harbor from Another Island
If you are staying on Maui, Kauai or the Big Island, Pearl Harbor can still be part of your trip. Inter-island tours can include flights, transportation and a guided Oahu route, which is much easier than trying to coordinate airport timing and Pearl Harbor access on your own. It is a full day, but it can be worth it when Pearl Harbor is one of your top Hawaii plans.
📞 Book Pearl Harbor Tours Early
Pearl Harbor tours can fill early during holidays, school breaks, cruise ship days and busy Oahu travel weeks. If you want to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, Battleship Missouri, USS Bowfin or Ford Island sites, reserve ahead and review your tour details carefully before your visit.
