Definition of Aloha: a Hawaiian word used when greeting or parting from someone.
Aloha is more than just a greeting or a goodbye, it’s a special feeling, an attitude… a spirit. The local Hawaiians consider it a way of life, a philosophy that holds everything tightly together. It is giving to someone in more ways than one knowing you may not get anything in return, unifying rather than dividing. The feelings and emotions of compassion, love, affection, gratitude, kindness and sympathy all rolled into one simple little word.
It is even a state law. Officially in 1986 the state of Hawaii created the Aloha Spirit Law which orders each person to treat others with traits of Aloha. Being one of the most isolated cultures in the world it started out as a necessity for Hawaiians to live in peace and work together in harmony. It is more of a symbolic law for the people to live by and to preserve the Hawaiian way of life than a law that is actually enforced. However be warned, if any officials or business owners do not conduct themselves as the law states their job or business could end up on precarious ground.
Here is the basis of the Aloha Spirit Law:
A “Akahai” meaning kindness, to be expressed with tenderness
L “Lokahi” meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony
O “Oluolu” meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness
H “Haahaa” meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty
A “Ahonui” meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance
The Spirit of Aloha is meant for everyone, not just the Hawaiians, and is the heart of relationships between all people. The five simple traits listed above should be practiced with everyone and everywhere. Committing to accepting and welcoming others with open arms could make this world a better place to live and raise the future generations to come. Sounds like the great state of Hawaii is on to something here and has the remedy to save the world.
Next time you visit the islands of Hawaii remember it is more than just a simple ‘hello’ or ‘ goodbye’ it is a special way of life.
