🏛️ Historic Downtown Honolulu
Downtown Honolulu is one of the best places on Oahu to see Hawaii’s royal history, government landmarks and old Honolulu streets all in one area. It is close to Waikiki, easy to pair with other Oahu activities, and gives your trip a little more meaning than another beach towel day. Nothing wrong with beach towel days, of course, but this part of Honolulu has stories worth making time for.
đź‘‘ Iolani Palace
Iolani Palace is the former home of Hawaiian royalty and one of the most important historic sites in Hawaii. It was the royal residence of King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani, and it remains the only official royal palace in the United States. A visit here gives you a closer look at Hawaii’s monarchy, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom and the people who shaped this part of Honolulu’s history.
⚖️ Aliiolani Hale
Across from Iolani Palace, Aliiolani Hale is home to Hawaii’s State Supreme Court and one of downtown Honolulu’s most photographed landmarks. The King Kamehameha statue stands in front of the building, making this a popular stop for photos and a natural part of many Oahu sightseeing tours. Together, the palace, statue and surrounding civic buildings give this area a strong sense of place.
⛪ Kawaiahao Church & Mission Houses
Kawaiahao Church is often called the “Westminster Abbey of the Pacific,” and its coral-block walls make it one of Honolulu’s most recognizable historic churches. Nearby Mission Houses add more context to the 1800s, when missionary families lived and worked in Hawaii. If you enjoy history, culture and older architecture, this area is worth slowing down for.
🌄 Punchbowl and More Honolulu History
Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific sits inside an old volcanic crater above Honolulu and honors many of America’s fallen service members. The lookout also gives a wide view over the city and ocean. Visitors who want a fuller historic day can pair downtown Honolulu with Pearl Harbor tours, Polynesian Cultural Center visits or other Honolulu tours.
