Must See Sites on the Big Island

The island of Hawaii, better known as the Big Island, holds a special place in the history of Hawaii. Providing a direct connection between present day and the first days of the Hawaiian Islands the Big Island is the only island with an active volcano, allowing bother scientists the chance to study and Hawaiians the chance to connect with the creation of the islands. The island is also the site of many historic artifacts, petroglyphs, locations, and even heiaus (ancient temples) that are still standing from the days of ancient Hawaii.

A trip to the Big Island is a favorite for visitors and locals alike, with plenty to do and see, the island is truly a treasure in Hawaii. What you choose to do and see is up to you, but we have some ideas that we think will deepen your love for Hawaii, and show off the natural beauty of the island.

Volcano
Mt. Kilauea has been erupting consistently since 1983, and as we mentioned earlier, it provides a great opportunity to see exactly how the islands were created. Only a short drive from Hilo, the volcano is a wonderful place to spend day, with so much to do and see, and ample opportunity to witness the newest creation of land on the entire planet.

Waterfalls
Two of the most popular waterfalls to visit on the Big Island are Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls. Both are amazing to see, Rainbow Falls is located in Hilo and is very easy to access, with parking and an easy path leading right to the falls. Akaka Falls is located approximately16 miles north of Hilo and requires about 1 mile of hiking to see the falls, though it is very worth the trek.

Black and Green Sand Beaches
Because of the volcano landscape of the island, black sand beaches are found on Maui and the Big Island, and are an incredible site. On the southern most point of the island is Papakolea Green Sand Beach, and is one of only 4 in the world, and is caused by the sand that is eroding out of the collapsing cinder cone. Once you hike down the cinder cone and arrive at the beach, you will be in awe.

Waipio Valley
There isn’t much that needs to be said about Waipio Valley. Once you arrive and take in the breathtaking views, you will understand exactly what we mean. There are really no words to describe the natural beauty of the lush landscape. Visit the Waipio Valley and the Hamakua Coast during your trip and you will head home with amazing pictures and memories.
