Although difficult to find on a map, Kahuku in Hawaii is a great small town with plenty of things to do. Kahuku sits on Oahu’s northeastern coast between Laie and Turtle Bay. For all you shrimp lovers out there, in Kahuku, you will find a numerous amount of shrimp trucks parked alongside the main street that runs through town. There are several shrimp farms in the area that raise shrimp right there in Kahuku. One of the most popular places to get a taste of some good shrimp is the old white truck right next to the road is called Giovanni’s. Choose from their three different flavors of shrimp – lemon and butter, scampi (with garlic), and/or spicy. Each of these shrimp dishes comes with two scoops of rice and is something to definitely try.
Kahuku is home to Kahuka High School, whose students have really made a name for themselves. The school has produced some famous people from it, such as the well-known musician Jack Johnson who attended the school and graduated from there in 1993. One of Jack’s classmates, Alexander Bone is now a member of the German Parliament. Other well-known graduates of Kahuka High are the award-winning surfer Panch Sullivan, public figure Earl Anzai, and renowned Chef Sam Choy. Kahuka High is also nationally ranked in the United States for football and for having the most active NFL players coming from a single high school. Kahuku High is a national ranked school, having one many national competition and titles. For anyone wanting to move into the area, you have picked a great place to send you kids to school.
Kahuka has been a popular filming location in the past having become famous in the mid-1970s when the popular TV game show, The Diamond Head Game was contested at the nearby Kuilima Hotel, which today is known as the Turtle Bay Resort. North Shore, a Fox TV show was also recently filmed here. The Turtle Bay Resort is a great place to go to have fun. With a nice beach and an area for swimming and snorkeling. You can grab a snack at the restaurant that is located there as well.
Kahuka Beach is very popular among fishermen, but keep in mind, it is not a good swimming beach because of the long limestone shelf and its rocky bottom that makes entering the ocean quite difficult. The Kahuku Golf Course backs up the beach. In Hawaiian, Kahuku means “the projection”, referring to nearby Kahuku Point, which is the northernmost point of the island of Oahu. Kahuka is a great place to live and is home to the Turtle Bay Resort, which is a great place to stay and relax in when visiting Oahu.
