Makapuu Lighthouse is one of Oahu’s most iconic landmarks, perched on the island’s southeastern tip overlooking the scenic Windward Coast. Built in 1909 and automated in 1974, this red-roofed lighthouse stands on dramatic sea cliffs, offering panoramic views of the coastline and even the neighboring island of Molokai. The paved Makapuu Lighthouse Trail is about two miles round trip and rewards hikers with some of the best vistas on Oahu.
While hiking the trail, you can clearly see two small offshore islets — Manana Island (Rabbit Island) and Kaohikaipu Island. Between December and April, the Molokai Channel becomes a prime viewing area for humpback whales migrating through Hawaiian waters. For an even closer look, you can join a guided Oahu Whale Watching Cruise or a scenic island sightseeing tour to experience more of Oahu’s natural beauty.
To reach Makapuu Lighthouse, start from Waikiki and take Kalakaua Avenue past the Honolulu Zoo and Kapiolani Park. Turn right onto Diamond Head Road and continue east along Kalanianaole Highway, passing Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach Park. Just past the Hawaii Kai Golf Course, you’ll find the gated trail entrance on the right. Hiking this short, scenic trail is one of the best Oahu activities for visitors looking to explore the island’s stunning coastal scenery.
