In Hawaii, the preservation of history is so important, and along with honoring the past and the culture of the islands, may very well be the most important aspects of life in Hawaii. The islands are packed with events that continued to be honored and kept in the front of mind today, and you can find some of these important sites during your visit to any of the Hawaiian Islands. One of the ways that the past is remembered and honored is at the historic National Parks in Hawaii, found on each island and designed to share the legacy of ancient Hawaii and the historic events that have helped to make Hawaii the place that we know and love today.
Historic National Parks in Hawaii
Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail – Big Island
A 175-mile trail on the southern tip of the Big Island, this is less of a national park and more of a series of places to hike and check out the stunning scenery. It can be accessed from multiple locations and offers breathtaking views of the island’s scenic coastline.
Haleakala National Park – Maui
This is one of the absolute musts for your trip to Maui. The dormant volcano encompasses a large majority of the island and is the place for a series of fun activities. The summit is the tallest point on the island and you can head up for sunrise or sunset, each offering a panoramic view of the island in a setting that just cannot be beat. While you’re at the summit, be sure to stop by the visitors center to learn about the volcano.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – Big Island
Featuring the only active volcano in Hawaii, Mt. Kilauea, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park showcases years of volcanic activity and destruction. You’ll feel like you’ve transported to the beginnings of the island while you’re here, and the sites will leave you in awe.
Kalaupapa – Molokai
The site of the leper colony on Molokai, Kalaupapa has been in use since 1866, with the sea cliffs and mountains of the island acting as a natural barrier for residents afflicted with the disease.
Pearl Harbor National Park – Oahu
Perhaps the most famous National Park in Hawaii, the Pearl Harbor National Park is the site of the tragic attacks of 1941 that thrust the United States into World War II. Features attractions here include the USS Arizona Memorial, USS Missouri, USS Bowfin, and the Pacific Aviation Museum, telling the story of the attacks, the ensuing war, and the effect on life in Hawaii.
