What’s in a name, right? When it comes to the most visited site in Hawaii, everything. Since 2008, the sites located at Pearl Harbor have been known as the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, which easily rolls off the tongue and only requires one break in the middle to catch your breath. But that name is no more, and over the next few months, visitors to the site will begin seeing signs and souvenirs with its new name: Pearl Harbor National Monument.
The new name is much simpler and provides a clearer description of the museums and memorials that are located around Pearl Harbor, including the USS Arizona Memorial and the USS Missouri Battleship. These sites honor the heroic bravery of those who defended Pearl Harbor and commemorate the United States' entrance into World War II.
At Pearl Harbor, there are a number of great sites to see, and though the USS Arizona Memorial remains closed for repairs, visitors get an incredible view of Pearl Harbor and Oahu during a ferry ride around the memorial for photos and the chance to see the stunning site up close. The memorial is scheduled to reopen in the fall, when the brand new name of the Pearl Harbor National Monument will officially be in place.
If you plan to visit Pearl Harbor during the spring and summer, take notice of the new name during your visit. Pearl Harbor Tours are a must for any vacation to Oahu, and though you may not be able to board the USS Arizona Memorial, visiting the museums and monuments around the Visitor Center and Ford Island offers a deep look into the history of World War II. You’ll enjoy a full narration of the events leading up to the December 7th attacks. A visit to Pearl Harbor is an experience that should not be missed!
After exploring these historic sites, enjoy a relaxing evening with a traditional Hawaiian celebration at the Aloha Kai Luau at Sea Life Park.
